This pair of works pertaining to Sea Shell studies represents original hand colored watercolor on copperplate engravings from Diderot and D’Alembert’s “Encyclopedie” published in Paris between 1751 and 1775. Diderot’s work was one of the first Encyclopedias published during the Age of Enlightenment in the mid-18th century. Diderot was condemned by the French Monarchy for the philosophy sections pertaining to the rights of man and social justice and was sentenced to three months imprisonment. This monumental work encompassed 28 to 35 volumes depending on the edition (it is not known which edition these pieces are from). The hand coloring was almost certainly done sometime after publication.
