Authentic Ancient Engraving, 1590 Theodor de Bry, Copper Plate
Authentic Ancient Engraving, 1590 Theodor de Bry. This ancient and authentic copper plate engraving is one of a series made by the famous Belgian engraver Theodore de Bry. The artist was a was an engraver, goldsmith, editor and publisher, whose works can be found in museums and libraries all over the world. This work is part of a documented collection, and is marked en verso: “authentic copper plate engraving” in four different languages (see photos). The engraving is dated by the collector to 1590, a reasonable date, since de Bry was active in the 1590s and some years following. This work is in remarkably good condition, due to its careful, custom-made framing. De Brys’ engravings have an important place in history, both artistic and social, despite their utter lack of accuracy and obvious bias. De Bry’s copperplate engravings were among the first images that Europeans encountered about the peoples, places, and things of the Americas, although produced by him almost a century after Columbus’ initial voyage, and even though de Brys never actually traveled across the Atlantic. His figures here, representing the indigenous Tainos peoples of the island the Spanish called Hispaniola are pure invention. But they do show the image of the indigenous peoples of the Americas to which Europeans were exposed, and which must inevitably have shaped their view of the New World. Copperplate engraving is an intaglio printing technique. The lines of the drawing are carved in the plate, the ink is put inside the grooves, and the remains of the ink are wiped off the surface of the plate. The polished plate is covered with a humid sheet of paper and the image is printed with the help of rollers of a printing press. Copperplate engraving demands professionalism and real mastery. An engraver worked slowly, minutely and carefully since it was impossible to make essential corrections. This item is in the category “Art\Art Prints”.
